What is Parsing anyway?

  • What does it mean to parse metadata?
As stated earlier, all metadata records are based on the FGDC Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata.  The standard provides for a consistent structure where each metadata element is explicitly defined and stored in a hierarchical structure.  If values are incorrectly entered, or if the format structure is inconsistent,  the metadata looses it's compliancy.  To prevent these errors, the document must be parsed, or reviewed for syntax.

  • How does parsing help?
Because the FGDC metadata content standard provides for a consistent structure, parsing can easily compare the input file against the FGDC standard.  Discrepancies between the input and the standard are syntax errors.

  • Are errors easy to fix?
There are two answers to that question: Yes and No.  Most often, a simple error creates a cascade of additional errors. This can results in an error message that seems to indicate nothing in the record is valid.  Resolving these errors typically involve a simple adjustment to a sentence, corrected spelling mistake(s), or an indention adjustment.  However, there are occasions where the error is not clear and a more precise review is required.

  • How can I reduce errors?
Errors can be reduced a number of ways.  Proper strategies and implementation of metadata creation is vital.  You can find an outline of successful strategies from the Create Metadata section of this workbook. Additionally, experience has taught that a good software product always helps!  CorpsMet95, developed by the US Army Corps of Engineers, has consistently proven its self through it's easy of use and intuitive interface.

  • What do I use to parse metadata?
CorpsMet95 provides the first step by ensuring that required fields are completed.  But, CorpsMet95 does not parse the values.  That's where mp enters the picture.  Created by the USGS, mp provides the user with a feedback file detailing the metadata record's content accuracy.  Errors are identified and explained in the file, making corrections easier to implement.

  • How do I use mp?
MP is a "command line" application.  That means it requires DOS for PC users.  Many people cringe at the thought of having to use DOS.  If you are one, do not get too upset.  MP's primary functions are easy to understand and implement.  The USGS provides an  mp user manual  that shows you what you need to know when parsing metadata records.
Lessons detailing how to use mp is now available here: How to use mp.
