Introducing GIS

A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a tool used to assemble, store, manipulate, analyze, and display information about objects and events on the earth.

"Simply speaking, a GIS links a database to a map."

GIS is used in numerous applications.  For example:
  • Calculate response times in the event of a natural disaster.

  • Find wetlands that need protection.

  • Identify schools within a particular district.

  • Map demographics for your location.

  • Provide a new business with ideal market location.
