Application Development
STRATEGIES FOR BEST DEVELOPING YOUR GIS APPLICATIONS

The complexity of developing a GIS makes it easy to overlook an important component of any functional GIS, it's  Application Development.

 INTRODUCTION....

Application Development is an integral part of GIS operations.  It is the creation of the tools necessary to complete the goals and objectives detailed in the Needs Analysis.

It is important to have a clear idea of what applications need to be developed.  Introducing these applications should emphasize the GIS's overall importance to the organization, the degree of impact and visibility, cost of development, and benefit of automation.

DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES

GIS application development takes time.  When developing the strategies, keep these factors in mind:

  • TIME
    Designate adequate time for development.
  • PURPOSE
Clearly identify the purpose of the application.
  • GOALS
Make sure the goals of your application are met (this will require testing and evaluation).
  • SOUND METHODS
Ensure that the methods implemented in the application are clear and documented.  Use proven methods for best results.
  • POLICIES
Know your user and organizational policies.
  • DATA
Know the input data. Understand the output required by your organization (make sure the output conforms to the organization's needs and policies).
  • TESTING
Test you applications prior to full-scale implementation. Ensure quality control.
  • DOCUMENTATION
Prepare documentation and provide instructions.  Also develop the training sessions tailored to your organization.
